As the author of novels about reincarnation I'm asked all the time, "What is that ineffable part of us anyway? Really. What is the soul?" The soul in many religions, philosophical and mythological traditions, is: the incorporeal and immortal essence of a living being. According to Abrahamic religions, only human beings have immortal souls. The ancient Egyptians believed that a human soul was made up of three parts: The Ka, the Ba, and the Akh. The Ka is essentially a person’s double, it is the life force and at death it is separated from the body. The Ba is the part of the soul that can travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. The Akh is the transfigured spirit

Eyes are mysterious things. From the moment of our birth we're intensely drawn to them. Have you ever really wondered... why is that? Why is it that our first breaths, crying and fitful, are almost instantly calmed when our eyes meet those of our mother? It almost looks as if our mother's provide a kind of anchor for us into this world. Anyone who's witnessed it will admit, there's clearly something in a mother's eyes that newborns easily recognize, all a newborn has to do is see into them, and in that moment it's as if they appear to think, "Oh hey, there you are... that's right, (deep breath, sigh), now I remember." For our part, there's an innate drive,

So here's an incredible but true thing that goes on in the world: 'N ba' is the Bambara greeting used by men in Mali. It's the equivalent of 'hello' but actually means 'my mother' or more specifically, 'thanks to the mother who bore me I am here this moment to greet you.' Wow! Ok, wait. A man's word for 'hello' in this indigenous language is basically "my mother!" Let's break it down because this could be the simplest and yet most profound thing ever. The basic form of greeting used by men in parts of the nation of Mali pays homage to women in a deep and sacred way. While I'm not sure how this translates in the way women are

As institutions go, religion is a pretty hot mess. From radicals, zealots and fanatics to abuse and systemic corruption at the highest levels in most major faiths—religion has seen better days... oh wait, no it hasn't. Throughout the entire recorded history of mankind, religion, as an institution, has been causing huge fucking problems. (Note, if you're either easily offended or super closed minded you'll want to stop here. I hope you enjoyed our time together. Yes, the blog is quite interesting. No, you're not allowed to read it if you're going to be a total snowflake on me, now go!) To be very clear, I don't mean spirituality has been a problem or God has been a problem. I mean, the religions: the organizations

One of the most beautiful things about this life is the differences in what we can see and perceive about one another and how they melt away in matters of the heart and in our shared truths of the human experience; what the soul just knows or feels. Really, we're all trying to describe the same stuff. It could come out as a sonnet or a rap song, a beautiful dress or a hug, and be given to us by people from Mother Teresa to Tupac Shakur, from Shakespeare to Dolly Parton, but whatever it is that pours from our hearts when we reach to understand one another and ourselves, it certainly seems like it's from the same place.

Think this sounds like a strange parallel, an odd conclusion to draw? Consider this... The Healthy Family Second only to love, enormous value is placed on independence, self-determination, character, and the authenticity of the individual. These are the pillars of good parenting, and the only paradigm by which one generation builds on the progress of the last, not only economically but also intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and ethically. The Co-dependent Family Built on dysfunctional helping relationships where unnecessary support is given (for a variety of toxic reasons) which in turn enables a perpetual culture of irresponsibility, under-achievement, and ultimate and perpetual lack of self-worth and self-realization. Nonexistent concept of boundaries. Blurred view of where one person ends and another begins—every move and decision

There's a war going on. Have you noticed? It's on every news channel, covered by every media outlet, everyday. It involves the whole of humanity, a true world war. Though it's proving powerful, sweeping and destructive, it has a secret. Something no one is talking about—that the entire thing will be won or lost on the battlefield of a single mind. Your mind. Welcome to World War Fear. Every last one of us has been drafted, is currently enlisted and on the frontlines. It's been said, in countless ways, by the greatest minds ever known to us … "I think therefore I am." Or, in other words ... "The mind is everything. What you think about you become." So what are we becoming

Inspiration is important. Soak up some of our favorite movie quotes, let them speak to you.   “Spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people.” ~ The Breakfast Club “I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.” ~ The Incredibles “Have courage and be kind.” ~ Cinderella “To live will be an awfully big adventure.” ~ Peter Pan “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” ~ Ferris Bueller's Day Off “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” ~ The Perks of Being a Wallflower “Our fate lies within us.
